Woodcocks are seven or eight group of similar species of the wagging birds belonging from the genus Scolopax. Woodcocks are the wide spread birds and are found in Northern hemisphere. Woodcocks belong from the family named sandpiper. Their body is robust containing wings that are rounded and short, as they have eyes and head that are large containing the bill that is straight. The legs of woodcocks are very short for the snipe. Their size if viewed then these birds is long about 10 to 12 inches. Woodcocks have the weigh about 7 to 9 ounces. Both male and female species are found where the female birds are larger in size than males. Their body color is soft blend form of various shades containing gray and brown having mottling above of black color and below containing uniform pale brown color. The woodcock’s habitat is found in eastern half of United States in all the seasons. In the winter season this usually migrates to south Atlantic and to Gulf States.
The courtship process occurs in woodcocks where the male species flight in courtship process is very interesting and curious. Their period of greatest activity found is in those hours during succeeding sunset and also when the moon is full. At day time it remains hides in thickets and deep blogs. Woodcock’s food consists mainly of snails, insects and their larvae. According to the fossil record woodcocks number are mainly extinct and they are known from sub fossil bones.
